Charcoal Self-Portrait

Students in the 2nd hour Art III class completed a study of foreshortening in order to develop a compelling self-portrait through the use of the charcoal medium. The students viewed historical examples of self-portraiture created by Edward Hopper, Diego Rivera, Kathe Kollwitz, Adrian Piper, and othes who used charcoal as a medium to produce quick sketches to study value. Another set of examples from Mark Sisson’s Drawing II classes at Oklahoma State University were shown to demonstrate how charcoal can be used to produce a refined, complete work of art. Below are a sample of completed works from the both 2nd. These works are 18″ x 24″ on Arches Cold Press Watercolor Paper.
