What is the central idea of your concentration?

The main idea of my art concentration is turning my friends into landscapes that represents their personality and physical body, and the sky represents what is going on in their minds. Most of my friends are taller or have a bigger build than me, so most are represented as mountains and waterfalls- yet each work is inspired by a real world locale. I wanted each person to be hidden and not standout too much. I wanted it to look natural, but a little out of place so you can find the model.

How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea?

I wanted to do something fun and three things inspired me for my concentration: The love story of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl (two volcanoes in Mexico), Moana and the body painting show ‘Skin Wars.’A couple of examples of how I demonstrated this idea: For 9 my friend is very kind, silly and a little weird in a good way. He’s way taller than me and has a bigger build. I based his piece on the Zhangye Danxia mountains in China. The mountains are big, colorful and beautifully weird. The sky is going from night to day (dawn). He struggles with anxiety but that does not stop him from having a positive attitude. I drew 7 as a mountain in Japan. She’s taller than me and has a wider build than I do. Her curly, wild hair reminds me of cherry blossoms in the spring. Her skies are clear and bright like her mind. 3 is a volcano that erupted. She’s very sweet and kind but very passionate. She will literally explode with excitement or cheer on her friends. Her sky is bright and clear, she struggles a little with anxiety so she does have ash in her sky. For 6, she’s very quiet, cold, and blunt. She deals with PTSD and describes it as “stuck in the moment,” so her skies are grey and unmoving. 12 is a small island on an ocean plankton. She’s small, keeps to herself and constantly alone.
