AP Drawing/Painting (Concentration)
What is the central idea of your concentration?
The central theme is the exploration of the psychological aspects of sleep. These pieces are meant to represent and illustrate my own sleep patterns and inconsistent relationship with sleep. I chose six physical aspects of sleep; Deprivation, Dreams, Naps, Night Terrors, Sleep Paralysis, and Nightmares. To examine and capture the psychological side to them, and to show how they appear in my mind and how they affect my own mental state during and after these chosen aspects.
This is about my own relationship with sleep and rest in general. I have had abnormal sleep patterns since childhood and have been on and off sleep medication my whole life. During the process of developing my concentration, I decided that I wanted to take a look at how my sleeping problems have affected my psyche and document how I experience that as a whole. The pieces are grouped into pairs in order to capture a different angle or further demonstrate the effects. Pieces 1 and 2 deal with deprivation and how that creates draining effects on both the body and the mind. In pieces 3 and 4, dreams are represented with somewhat nonsensical imagery in crisp black and white. Pieces 5 and 6 deal with napping and the emptiness and the calm experienced when taking a nap. These images are monochromatic to emphasize the calmness. Pieces 7 and 8 represent night terrors with the horror and absurdity of the imagery in more detailed black and white lines to emphasize the aspects of panic and fright. In pieces 9 and 10 sleep paralysis is shown in color, to symbolize the realness of the experience which contrasts the rest of my concentration. Lastly, pieces 11 and 12 symbolize nightmares with somewhat bizarre imagery in black and white.
