Students Accepted to the Oklahoma Arts Institute and Art I Self-Portrait Drawings Posted

Congratulations to Olivia Walker and Paige Nguyen who were selected to attend the 2021 Oklahoma Arts Institute. These students will engage in an intensive two-week workshop with John Hampshire who is a Professor of Fine Art at SUNY Adirondack, where he has taught for the last 15 years. Each year several hundred students from across Oklahoma apply to the Oklahoma Arts Institute drawing program, but only 20 students are accepted. This marks the eighth straight year that students from YHS have been selected as a participant or alternate to attend OSAI, and will be Olivia Walker’s fourth consecutive year to attend and Paige Nguyen’s second consecutive year to attend. This year’s program will be held at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha.

The students in Art I completed a study of portraiture last week by creating a self-portrait drawing in pencil. Prior to beginning this assignment, the students created several studies of the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth and the medical terminology associated with each of these different facial features. Students then learned how to use spatial reasoning to create accurate proportions in their drawing, while also using the foundational Elements of Art develop a sense of realism within the self-portrait. Lots of great examples of these drawings can be found here.
