The Ceramics I students continued their study of Raku pottery by practicing the “American” or “Western” method of Raku that was brought to fame by artist Paul Soldner. This method produces true black areas where there is unglazed bisque and the glazed areas of the ceramic piece are characterized by a sheen of metallic color. Students were encouraged to work with more abstract forms and had to include at least one coil piece, one slab piece, and an imprint or carving of some type. Below are examples from this year’s class.
