La Bella Principessa Replicas

The students in Art III completed a study of Leonardo da Vinci’s La Bella Principessa which included the viewing of the PBS documentary, Mystery of a Masterpiece, in which a group of art historians and scientists tested and analyzed the artwork to validate its authenticity. The student’s assignment was to act as an “art forger” and replicate the work as closely as possible. They were required to study how different kinds of media (chalk, ink, and synthetic vellum) interact with one another as well as “age” the artwork so that it would visually pass for a 15th century drawing.

The top 5 student replicas were permanently mounted to oak panel, much in the same fashion that the original La Bella Principessa was foundThe real da Vinci masterpiece currently resides in an unknown vault somewhere in Switzerland.
