Charcoal Self-Portrait

The students in the 2nd and 7th hour Art III classes completed a study of charcoal and how to develop a compelling self-portrait. The students viewed historical examples from Edward Hopper, Diego Rivera, Kathe Kollwitz, Adrian Piper, and other artists who used charcoal as a medium to produce quick sketches to study value. Another set of examples from Mark Sisson’s Drawing II classes at Oklahoma State University were shown to demonstrate how charcoal can be used to produce a more refined, complete work of art. Below are a sample of completed works from the both 2nd and 7th hour. These works are larger in scale at 18″ x 24″ each.
